Our story

A cafe built around a camera.

Magpie Cafe is Haldwani's first wildlife-photography theme café, open since 2021 and started by wildlife photographer Deepankar Khulbe of Wildlifedzone. The walls carry his framed photographs of birds and animals, so every table has something to look at.

The space is a renovated house on the main road, with rooms to tuck into indoors and open seating outside. The kitchen does Chinese, Italian and continental plates, and the counter does speciality coffee, shakes and mocktails. Bring friends, a laptop, or the whole family.

The photographer

Meet Deepankar Khulbe.

Deepankar left a corporate job to follow wildlife. He spends his time in India's forests, national parks and bird sanctuaries with a camera, and shares the work as Wildlifedzone.

Snow leopards, tigers, leopards, fishing cats, otters, the great hornbill and the monal have all been in front of his lens. Prints from those trips hang on the cafe walls, which is how a house on Gas Godam Road became a gallery you can eat in.

He also speaks about human–wildlife conflict in the places where forests and settlements meet, and about how people and animals can share them.
